What is a mordant and why you need it for natural dyeing
To be successful in natural dyeing you need to know something a little about mordants and fixatives. The bottom line is that natural dyes will not bind to natural fibres without the use of a mordant or fixative. Although you will initially get a nice result from dyeing, it will quickly wash out or fade! Alum is one of the most popular mordants used in natural dyeing, because you can dye and mordant at the same time. Simply add the alum to the dye bath, mix well, and then add yarn or fibre. Alum is also considered the safest mordant, so it is probably the best choice if you are just starting out. Iron (or Ferrosulphate) tends to darken the colour of your fabric. Use it to make beautiful shades of brown. We recommend 15 grams of iron per 500 grams of fabric.
