Poplin is a centuries old known weave. The name comes from papelino, a fabric made at Avignon (France) in the 15th century and is named for the Papal’s (Pope’s) residence there. Originally made of silk. Probably the weave existed longer but we have no proof. Later they also used silk only for the weave and for the weft another material. This use of different materials gave the fabric a sort of ribbon alongside the whole surface of the fabric. Poplin is a plain-weave but with much more warp yarns tightly packed (often double more) than weft yarns.

Due to this and the tight poplin woven very fine yarns in only cotton, the fabric has a nice shine, almost like silk! Treat it with care and you can make very nice garment of it, like blouses, skirt and shirts. Or whatever purpose you would like, as lining or rich upholstery.
