Cochineal differs from most natural dyes because it isn’t plant-based. Cochineal is a tiny insect with the Latin name Dactylopius coccus. The biopigment is coming from parts of the insect and its eggs. In ancient times they were native in the baltic area in Europe, where nowadays the cochineal mainly comes from oversea, America.
Use from 3 to 10% w.o.f. ( weight of fabric ) to get nice strong pink colours.
You can alter the colour to red or purple shades with acid or base chemicals like vinegar and soda.
